I can't imagine a summer without going to Institute! From Logan, Utah to Snowmass, Colorado and many places in between, my sister, mom and I loaded our harps in the car each summer to enjoy a week filled with learning, friendships and memories. The experiences that I started making when I was six years old until I graduated from high school are key parts of the foundation I have today as a professional harpist and teacher.
Now that I have my own students and family, I realize even more the benefit of attending institute. There is nothing like spending five days, five classes per day, 25 hours in one week surrounded with other students, parents and teachers who are interested in the same goal. Dr. Suzuki once said, "Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart."
I hope you will all join me this summer as I learn, make friendships and memories, and strive to develop a "beautiful heart".Maria W. Phippen, Institute Director
